National Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Week Rally
The Arkansas Advocates for Nursing Home Reform

From Martha Deaver, President, Arkansas Advocates for Nursing Home Residents -

The Arkansas Advocates for Nursing Home Residents (AANHR) celebrated their 8th annual Residents’ Rights Rally at the State Capital on October 10th. The annual rally is to acknowledge the rights of nursing home residents. We know that when a person can no longer be responsible for their own care, many go to a long-term care setting.

I am happy to say that we had a great turnout! Our keynote speaker was the AR State Attorney General, Dustin McDaniel. Other featured speakers were: Candice Brook, speaking on behave of Dr. David Montague, Director of UALR Senior Justice Center; Maria Diaz, AARP State Director; Kathie Gately, Arkansas State Ombudsman; and, Dr. Gerald Parker Sr., Pilgram Progress Missionary Baptist Church. The honorable Governor Mike Beebe signed a proclamation recognizing this special event.

AANHR’s goal as an organization is to “protect and improve the quality of care and life for nursing home residents in AR.” We acknowledge the importance of these rights guaranteed by the federal nursing home reform act of 1987. These rights must not be diminished! According to the Federal Government these rights are being violated every day! AR nursing homes were cited over 2,500 times last year, by the State Office of Long Term Care (OLTC) for causing actual harm to residents. On display at the rally, was a ribbon tree with large silver bows. Each bow on the tree represented an AR nursing home that was cited for actually harming residents. Everyone attending the event received a copy of these nursing homes that were cited for violations that caused actual harm. Along with the nursing homes cited for violations causing actual harm, each person attending also received the laws that were violated by each nursing home. Information pertaining to protecting the rights’ of AR nursing home residents was handed out to every person in attendance.
