Medications can be helpful if they are treating an illness. It is important to be aware of whether a drug is being used for treatment or as a restraint. You should be told about any drug before it is given to you so you can decide if you consent or want to refuse it.
As a part of our consumer education campaign, Avoiding Drugs as Chemical Restraints: Changing the Culture of Care, Consumer Voice created an information sheet: Know Your Drugs & Know Your Rights, which provides questions family members or residents can ask their care provider about medications that have been prescribed to them and a list of drugs often used as chemical restraints.
The info sheet is available as a PDF and also as consumer-friendly, wallet-sized expandable cards on sale in our online store in packs of 25, 50, and 100.
