When Elma Holder and a small group of advocates came together 50 years ago at a nursing home provider conference, they used their collective voices to put a spotlight on the deplorable conditions in nursing homes and demand quality of care and quality of life for residents. The Consumer Voice grew out of that meeting.
A few weeks ago, more than 400 advocates from around the country joined together recognizing that while many things have changed in the long-term care system over the last several decades, the need for strong advocacy continues to combat longstanding issues such as insufficient staffing, abuse and neglect, and rights violations.
How will Consumer Voice’s advocacy be focused as we look to the next 50 years, and beyond?
- Empowering residents and families to advocate for better care and bring their voices to the policy table.
- Growing and supporting our advocacy community with tools and resources to hold policymakers accountable for implementing and enforcing standards.
- Fighting to ensure that public dollars go towards staffing and resident care.
- Promoting best practices in caregiving and the critical role of direct care staff.
- Advocating for a long-term care system that offers consumers affordable, quality options across all settings.
